Asian Decor

Asian Decor Biography.
Tatami mats are primarily used as flooring in Japanese homes and martial arts dojos. You may have seen them in the tatami rooms at Japanese restaurants. Our tatami mats all have a thickness of 2.5". The mats traditionally measure 3'x6', but we offer a variety of other sizes. They consist of a thick rice straw core, a cover woven from soft reed, and two cloth borders. They have been crafted in Asia and have been FDA-approved.
Tatami has played a significant role in Japanese culture. Its history stretches back to ancient times, when it originated as a simple straw mat spread over the bare earth to provide softness and warmth. Then, in the Heian period (A.D. 794-1185), tatami evolved into a movable throw mat with added layers of rice straw for comfort. Soon, the nobles began to use tatami as a way to distinguish their social rank - only they enjoyed the privilege of sitting on tatami, and commoners had to sit on the ground. In the 15th century, tatami became a permanent covering for the entire floor of a room. Tatami use became so widespread that the Japanese began measuring rooms and other spaces in terms of tatami. Today, most houses in Japan have at least one tatami room.
